The first pickup truck Caddy appeared in the Yugoslav city of Sarajevo in 1982. When creating it, the standard for that time method was used: they took a serial passenger car, extended the base, attached a cargo compartment instead of the rear part and strengthened the rear suspension. Initially, the Volkswagen Caddy was created exclusively as a delivery van: its interior was absolutely not adapted for the carriage of passengers. The car was made on the platform of the first-generation Golf model, and in the exterior a lot was borrowed from the Polo. For example, the front part of the body down to the door and rearview mirror.
The model is equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline carburetor engine producing 81 hp Rear suspension spring chassis reinforced. As an option, a plastic top was installed on the pickup, with or without a lifting rear sash.
The release of the first generation continued until 1992.
Then, in 1995, the second Saddy appeared. The principle of construction was fully preserved: the front part of a compact and cheap segment B car, an extended wheelbase and a spacious body. The engine is diesel, of the options only the most necessary - because the car was supposed to be affordable. He was in great demand not only in Western Europe, but also in Russia. Caddy was very pleased with small firms, product dealers and other organizations that constantly carried small batches of goods or equipment.
Production of the second generation Caddy stopped last year. Now the equipment on which it was manufactured is dismantled and is being prepared for shipment to Argentina, where its release will soon resume. The possibility of its supply, including to Russia, is being considered. Its price, naturally, will be lower than that of the Caddy-3.
In 2000, the passenger car market experienced a revolution. The global auto industry giants presented new models that were intended not only for the transportation of goods, but also for passenger operation. Renault releases the Kangoo, then the Opel Combo and the Ford Tourneo appeared. Following the trends of the modern market and demand, Volkswagen launches the new Caddy on the Golf V. chassis.
The New Caddy family is a new generation of high-tech universal cars. Reliability, which has become the hallmark of the previous generation Caddy, has been continued in the new model.
The third Caddy is made single-volume, that is, its body is a single unit - like a minivan. The cargo compartment on the new Caddy is no longer separated from the driver’s cabin by a step as was the case with the second-generation Caddy. At the same time, it also grew significantly in all directions: width by 106 mm, base by 81 mm, and total length by 172 (up to 4.4 m). The luggage compartment volume increased by 300 liters and reached a value of 3.2 cubic meters!
New Caddy can carry 750 kg of cargo inside and 700 - 740 kg (depending on the engine) on a trailer without brakes or 1.2 - 1.5 tons in a trailer equipped with brakes.
Caddy exists in two versions: commercial Kasten and passenger Kombi. Buyers of both Caddy options are offered with four different engines at once: two petrol engines of 1.4 liters (75 hp) and 1.6 liters (102 hp), as well as two diesel engines: 2-liter SDI (69 hp) and turbocharged 1.9 ЕВШ (105 hp).
