VAZ-2121 "Niva" - a four-seater passenger car all-terrain. Produced by the Volga Automobile Plant.

The car VAZ-2121 "Niva" is a design development of AvtoVAZ JSC. Available since 1977. This is a car for off-road driving, traveling to hard-to-reach places, hunting and fishing trips. Folding rear seat allows you to place and carry a variety of loads. Connector tailgate on the level of the floor provides ease of loading and unloading.

The Niva is an all-terrain vehicle with a permanent non-dismountable drive for all wheels (for off-road vehicles to the Niva, this was only the Range Rover) with a center differential and a transfer case with a lowering row. The car had a very progressive design, combining excellent off-road qualities with the comfort of a passenger car, and had practically no analogues at that time. Successfully exported to many countries. The car became one of the first representatives of the so popular "parquet" SUVs.

Body - all-metal, carrying, three-door, equipped with seat belts. The front seats - with headrests, adjustable in length and tilt backs, recline forward. Another feature of this unique machine was the use of units of passenger cars. So, its engine was created on the basis of the 2106, gearbox and rear axle also borrowed from this machine. Despite this, "Niva" has a unique maneuverability for such a machine.

The car was installed 4-speed gearbox with synchronizers on the forward gears, or 5-speed gearbox. The transfer box is a two-stage, with a center differential having a forced lock. The cardan transmission consists of an intermediate cardan shaft (connects the gearbox to the transfer case) and the cardan shafts of the drive for the front and rear axles.

Independent front suspension, on the transverse rocking levers, with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar. Rear - dependent, with coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers, four longitudinal and one transverse rods.

Since the start of production, versions with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder carburetor gasoline engine (VAZ-21210) have been produced. A modification of 21211 that appeared later with the 1.3 engine was not successful.

As a result of the modernization of 1993, a new model "Taiga" was born, which was assigned the index "VAZ-21213". This is a four-seater all-terrain car with a permanent non-switchable all wheel drive. With their predecessor "Niva" these models are similar as twin sisters. It is hard to believe that between these modifications is 16 years old. During these years, the plant made almost no changes to the design of 2121. Yes, and the changes made in 21,213 "pull" rather on cosmetic ...

Externally, the new car has a modified rear end. At 21213th "long", to the bumper of the third door and the new rear Fanari. Loading anything in the luggage compartment has become much easier. Invisible, but very serious improvement - a new form of the combustion chamber. Refinement of the engine, together with changes in the transmission allowed to significantly reduce fuel consumption.

In the transmission of the new machine five-speed gearbox and final drive with a ratio of 3.9. Reinforced crosses are used (unfortunately this does not mean more durable). Their size has changed and grease nipples have appeared. In the drive transfer case - CV joints. The purpose of its installation is to reduce vibration and transmission noise.
