VAZ-2106 Zhiguli / Lada 1600 / Lada 1500L / Lada 1300SL - a four-door, five-seater passenger car with a “sedan” type body and rear driving wheels. One of the most popular models of the Volga Automobile Plant.

When in 1976 at the factory in Togliatti they mastered the production of the VAZ-2106 model, which was reworked for domestic operating conditions from the RAT 124 Speciale of 1972, no one could assume that it would become the most popular and mass production of the Volga car factory.

The “Six” differs from the VAZ-2103 in a more powerful 80-horsepower VAZ-2106 engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters, a different electrical equipment scheme and a modified exterior and interior design. So, the front dual headlights got plastic “glasses”, the radiator grille was changed, there are other bumpers with plastic “fangs” and “corners”, the rear lights are combined with a license plate light, plastic “gaskets” between the grille and the headlights. Compared to the "Moskvich" cars, these 5-seater sedans, distinguished by the best dynamics and truly comfortable interior, were the height of comfort and prestige for wide sections of USSR motorists. In the late 1970s, the VAZ-2106 immediately gained fame as an "elegant" and high-speed car, but an expensive and less "practical" than the other "Lada". Decent for the time dynamics (maximum 150 km / h and 16 with up to 100 km / h), relief seats with headrests, dashboard with tachometer and excellent sound insulation - there was something to appreciate.

In 1979, the plant started producing less powerful versions of the VAZ-21061 with a 1.5-liter 71-horsepower VAZ-2103 engine and a VAZ-21063 with a 1.3-liter 64-horsepower VAZ-21011 engine. They were not popular among the people, but the scale of their production increased (especially 21063), and under the conditions of the Soviet shortage, consumers had to put up with a combination of an expensive and weighted body with a weak engine, which noticeably worsened the dynamics. Since 1980, they began to mount the Ozone type 2107 carburetors. The change of electricians due to the changing technology was happening all the time. In 1977, machines began to be equipped with new terminals and wiring connections, and from 1986 they installed a new relay.

In 1982, the first modernization of the car. At the VAZ-2106, the upgraded 75-horsepower (according to the new GOST) VAZ-2106 engines began to be mounted. On the rear wing, along the molding line, they stopped installing light reflectors. In 1988, the exhaust system was upgraded: a single-use gasket and nut were installed in it.

In 1990, at the VAZ, they mastered a kind of Lux package - the VAZ-21065 with a standard VAZ-2106 engine with a contactless ignition system, a Solex carburetor (21053-1107010-03), halogen headlights, improved upholstery and other headrests. This modification was produced with the engine 1500, "Five" bumpers, electric rear window, a more powerful generator, five-speed gearbox. Export versions of the VAZ-21064 externally differed from the VAZ-21065 with bumpers with integrated turn signals and a slightly different electrical circuit. From 1985, first, export versions were developed, then sometimes they began to install a 5-speed VAZ-2112 gearbox, and later, a VAZ-21074 type gearbox, which significantly reduces fuel consumption on the track and engine noise.

By the end of the 1980s, this model with modifications remained the most widespread and popular in the VAZ program. Of course, it was no longer considered prestigious, but the good memory of the first family of Zhiguli maintained a steady demand for the six. Even the domination of the low-power VAZ-21063 modification and the sharp deterioration in the quality of the assembly and components in the 1990s did not affect it. The car eventually became so affordable that it moved into the category of unpretentious "workhorses." He has a permanent army of fans. However, now the VAZ-2106 is still gradually losing ground, primarily due to the obsolescence of the design and interior, as well as the rather low ride quality, organically inherent in the classical layout. Nevertheless, the "six" has every chance to meet on the conveyor and its quarter-century anniversary.

Thin doors without shockproof bars no longer fully meet modern safety requirements, and the high level of noise in the cabin of the models of the latest release is not evidence of poor insulation, but of engine and transmission defects, which is now not uncommon, as is the destruction of the front axle beam . This was the quality of components at VAZ ... Besides, with the loss of prestige of the model, the moldings were no longer installed on modifications with the cheapest equipment, and in general they reduced chrome in the interior to a minimum, which nevertheless did not make the car more modern (especially on chrome in the decoration of cars again returned). To a significant disadvantage of such configurations can be attributed to the lack of electric rear window.

The most unsuccessful detail interior design can be called a thin and slippery steering wheel. However, another, more modern, smaller size comes across on the model 21065. The family relic - four headlights in rectangular double "glasses", have already gone out of fashion so much that, one can say, again give the model a certain "charm". In general, despite the moral age, the VAZ-2106 can be considered the optimal "first car" in life.
