Ideal VAZ 2103 and the Great Festival of Lada | Zenkevich
In 1972, AvtoVAZ launched a more powerful version of the Zhiguli, the VAZ-2103, which was perceived by many as a completely new, more powerful and comfortable model. Naturally, for the absolute majority of the population - much more prestigious and expensive. In fact, it was only a modification of the "Suite", fully compliant with the FIAT 124 Speciale of 1968, the design of which was reworked in the same way as the base FIAT 124 turned into a VAZ-2101. The mastering of its production was envisaged by agreement with the FIAT concern somewhat later than the base models, and a 1.5-liter 2103 engine of 77 hp was provided for its configuration.
In 1972, the production of the model VAZ 21035 also began, which looks identical to the VAZ 2103, but with the engine VAZ 2101. The production of the VAZ 21033, which looks outwardly identical to the VAZ 2103, but with the engine VAZ 21011, began in 1977.
Before the appearance on the market of a more prestigious VAZ-2106 and for some time after that, the "2103" was in great demand and was deservedly considered the most comfortable and dynamic. Its popularity in the late 1970s was even greater than the recently appeared "six" and "Niva", which were considered unjustifiably "complicated", expensive, and generally foppish. But now the rating of these cars fell utterly: for example, the VAZ-2103 has practically not been stolen in recent years. This is understandable, since the last VAZ "treshki" stopped collecting a decade and a half ago!
Although the differences in the trim "treshki" from the "penny" are quite significant, nevertheless the rear row of seats of this sedan did not become more spacious, but the space above the head compared to the VAZ-2101 increased by 15 mm (due to a different seat design), the distance from the ceiling to the seat is 860 mm. The instrument panel, which has a clock and tachometer, is completely different - "rich". The seats and upholstery are different from the VAZ-2101, which was cool for the 1970s, but the next “six” really looked more advantageous in this regard. Like all classic sedans, the Lada models of the VAZ-2103 have the same drawbacks, such as: inconvenience of loading luggage due to the high rear panel, a small “glove box” without illumination, weak light in the cabin, etc. From the point of view of modern ergonomics, the differences from the "penny" seem ridiculous. Until 1980, the glass washer pump was a foot-type.
Dermatin seats with low backs were not even equipped with head restraints, and the salon was practically never modernized, and by the end of production (1984) it was significantly outdated, or rather became “unfashionable.” Although it must be admitted, the build quality in those days was higher: for example, the size of the gaps in the body panels and the fit of the doors did not cause any complaints. The base 77-hp VAZ-2103 engine allowed a speed of 100 km / h on this sedan in 19 s. For export versions of the VAZ-21033 and VAZ-21035, respectively, mounted 1.3-liter engines VAZ-21011 with a capacity of 69 hp. or quite non-dynamic, but the “economical” 64-horsepower VAZ-2101 engine, the noise from which and from the oncoming air flow just shocked. In the last decade, a number of such low-power modifications were re-exported back to Russia.
Having kept the ground clearance - 170 mm under the rear axle case, the car at the expense of the lower, than the "Moskvich", "sediments" of the body on an uneven dirt road catches the exhaust manifold and all the "ridges". At the same time, the behavior on the road is typical for the "classics": the car behaves not quite correctly - the "soft" suspension and, as a result, the blurred backlash of the "steering" makes it difficult to control at full speed on a slippery road. The change of electricians due to the changing technology came in 1977, when they began to install new terminals and wiring connections. Several upgrades underwent a carburetor. The first was in 1974, when its design was only slightly revised, and in 1976 a quality screw was added. In 1980, began to install the carburetor type "Ozone" model 2107.
It is quite difficult to find native spare parts for the “treshka” (especially chrome-plated radiator grille and bumpers with chrome-plated fangs), but nevertheless, due to the high degree of unification and due to the fact that the car service mechanics know the design, the car can be re-equipped interchangeable components and assemblies from the most common model - VAZ-2106.
