The station wagon first came off the VAZ conveyor in 1971 and was unified with many basic units and parts with the basic VAZ-2101 sedan. The dashboard and the driver's workplace are absolutely identical to those of the VAZ-2101. The edge of the rear door is brought to the bumper and is flush with the level of the boot floor, which simplifies loading and unloading operations. The back door opens up. The spare wheel and gas tank moved under the trunk, providing a luggage compartment transported by luggage. The back seat (of course, solid), you can expand and get a horizontal cargo area. Its surface has a corrugated profile that does not allow the cargo to "walk" through the cabin. This car enjoyed deserved popularity among summer residents and tourists, thanks to the convertible rear part of the cabin.
The license plate is located on the rear door, the rear lights are arranged vertically. But the technical level of generalists of that time was distinguished by a weak sealing of the cabin from dust from the back door and gasoline vapors through the neck of the gas tank. For the larger mass of the cargo-passenger VAZ-2102, the suspension springs and shock absorbers were further strengthened, which made it possible to maintain a lifting capacity of 250 kg with two riders (or 60 kg with five passengers), while the car’s own weight increased by 55 kg.
The car was equipped with a 64-horsepower gasoline engine (torque 88 Nm at 3400 rpm) running on AI-93 gasoline. Due to the increased load, the engine and clutch gear ratio of the main pair was increased from 3.9 to 4.4 using the so-called load gear.
The plant carried out the following modernization of cars:
- until 1977, negative diodes were pressed into the cover on the generators, and in 1983 changes were made to the electrical part;
- 2101 carburetors were upgraded in 1974 and produced until 1976, the third series (2101-1107010-03) from 1976 to 1978.
Since 1979, new 2106 series carburetors have been mounted on the machines.
In 1978, there were modifications of the model: the VAZ 21021 with a four-cylinder, 69-horsepower, 1.3-liter engine and a VAZ 21023 with a carburetor engine 1.5 with a power of 71 hp. which were intended primarily for export. In the export version, the VAZ-2102 car was equipped with a wiper and washer of the rear cargo door, with seats from the VAZ-2106 with headrests. Also produced modifications VAZ 21022 (working volume of cylinders 1 200), VAZ 21024 (working volume of cylinders 1 300) and VAZ 21026 (working volume of cylinders 1 450).
In 1980, the model range was upgraded: a new ignition distributor, type 30.3706-01, began to install a 2-liter glass washer tank and a footswitch on all models, like the VAZ-21011.
In the period from 1982 to 1984, together with the valve drive lever, the camshafts were nitrated to provide enhanced corrosion resistance, wear resistance and resistance to alternating loads. The problem of rapid wear of springs was decided only with the transition to the technology of bleaching cams, which closed the topic of the terrible shortage of this drill in the late 1970s and the first half of the 1980s. The difference between such camshafts is a hexagonal belt between the third and fourth cams.
Since 1983, in some of the VAZ-21023 cars produced, the electrical equipment of the front of the car was carried out according to the VAZ-21013 sedan scheme. In view of the western trend, since 1986, fuel tanks were installed without drain plugs.
This first station wagon enjoyed deserved love and gained fame as the “best friend” of the Soviet summer resident before the appearance of the VAZ 2104.
In 1986, a couple of years after mastering the VAZ 2104 station wagon, the release of the “two” was discontinued.
