Hyundai Coupe Review - With Richard Hammond (2002)
The history of the Hyundai Coupe began in the early 90s, when the company introduced the concept sports coupe HCD-II, and then in 1994 - the concept HCD-III. A lot of positive feedback from both the press and the public inspired the company to create a production car, which was introduced in 1996 in Geneva.
The first version of the sports Hyundai Coupe was created on the basis of the Hyundai Lantra and Hyundai Sonata. This is a great sports car, the development of the suspension and steering mechanisms which involved the famous Porche.
In the American market, the car was named Tiburon. Model Coupe brought the company a real success.
By the 2000 model year Coupe updated. For the most part, the changes affected the appearance of the car. The front part got a new lighting and profiled hood. Inside it became more spacious. The upholstery is made of quality material, and the black seats look pretty impressive. They are equipped with heated and mechanical adjustments. The driver's seat has a change in the inclination of the cushion and the profile of the backrest. The amplitude of the longitudinal movement of the driver's seat is sufficient for people of average and slightly taller, it is a bit tall for tall people. The steering wheel and automatic gearbox trim is leather, sewn with deliberately rough stitches. Plastic dash trim artfully made-up under brushed aluminum. Coupe's sloping hood provides excellent visibility ahead and allows you to see near road obstacles. But the visibility "over the shoulder", back-right and back-left, is strongly limited by wide rear pillars.
The instrument panel is perfectly readable, due to the combination of red and gray colors. The main place on it is taken by the speedometer and tachometer. Even if, at the first visual perception, the torpedo lines may seem intricate, in practice everything turns out to be simple, logical and convenient.
The trunk, under which a full-size spare tire is hidden under the floor, is quite large and deep for a coupe.
Transmission to choose a five-speed manual, or "automatic". It goes well with a 140 hp 2-liter engine. or with an engine capacity of 1.6 liters.
All versions have windows with electric windows and doors with central locking. The car perfectly holds the grip, and the power steering with good feedback adds confidence when driving.
In the fall of 2001, the Coupe was subjected to a global facelift, after which a new V6 2.7 liters appeared in the lineup of power units. But the 1.8 liter engine was discontinued.
The third generation Coupe in contrast to the previous model, created in the American design center Hyundai and focused mainly on the American market, was developed by young Korean designers and with a clear European bias. The exterior of the car turned out to be memorable and with a moderate dose of aggression, and the interior is quite stylish. The Coupe received Recaro sport seats and Michelin Pilot tires.
In 2003, the base version of the Hyundai Coupe received a new engine - a four-cylinder 2-liter with variable valve timing. Its power increased from 136 hp up to 143 hp, and besides this, the power unit has become much more economical. Fuel consumption was 8 liters per 100 km. With the new engine, the Coupe accelerates to 100 km / h in 9.1 seconds. The maximum speed increased to 208 km / h.
In the same year, Hyundai offered a limited edition coupe on the European market. The series was named Style and sold 150 copies. The car was painted black "metallic", rear spoiler with brake light repeater, new air intakes in the front bumper, 17-inch wheels and an antenna with electric drive.
The salon is upholstered in light brown leather, aluminum lining and a steering wheel trimmed with two-tone leather were added to give a sporty look.
In January 2005, an updated version of the Coupe was presented. No radical changes have been made. In front of the body, a new front bumper with a large central air intake and small ventilation slots in the corners of the bumper with integrated fog lamps appeared. The headlight optics were also changed; after modernization, several separate fixtures are located under the common cap. Slightly changed the outline of the rear of the car.
As a rule, the list of additional equipment was replenished. Now it is possible to install the EPS stability system, as well as new stylish 17-inch rims.
The power units were left unchanged, as before under the hood set a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 143 hp. with variable valve timing system or CVVT 2.7-liter V6, whose power increased to 175 hp Together with the new 6-speed manual transmission, it provides unrivaled smoothness and control accuracy. But the 1.6-liter engine produces 105 hp cars will not be completed anymore.
New Hyundai Coupe demonstrates excellent handling and impeccable control of the road. The Electronic Data Network Controller Area Network (CAN) is responsible for the operation of the intelligent security system. At the moment of impact, the computer evaluates the power of the collision and decides on the activation of airbags and belt tensioners.
Hyundai Coupe - a beautiful car with a spectacular appearance, which few people indifferent.
