Citroën BX (1/2) - Historia y evolución

The BX debut took place in Paris in 1982, where the car was presented in several versions at once, and aroused great interest among the public. Design Citroen BX belongs to the famous Italian studio Bertone. This two-volume, 5-door, 5-seater hatchback aimed at a wide range of buyers took the place between the CX and GSA.

Citroen BX was one of the first to get glued frontal and rear windows, an almost flat bottom and recessed door handles, which, despite the obvious angularity of the forms, gave the car excellent aerodynamic properties. Due to its low drag coefficient, the BX has become one of the leaders among the mass-produced models. But the main ridge of designers Citroen is hydropneumatic suspension, a real source of comfort.

Another Citroen calling card is the one-spoke steering wheel.

The car was offered with three engine options, by the way, the type of power unit determined the index following the name. For example, the BX14 was equipped with a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine producing 62 hp, which is aggregated with a 4-speed gearbox. With this unit, the Citroen BX developed a maximum speed of 155 km / h and consumed 5.6 liters per 100 km.

The BX16 had a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter, 90-hp engine that paired up with a five-speed gearbox. The maximum speed of the car under the hood of which this engine stood was 176 km / h.

There was another version of the BX with a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine producing 72 hp, which was aggregated with a 5-speed gearbox. The maximum speed of this power unit 163 km / h.

A year after his debut, Citroen BX entered the UK car market. In the same 1983, they began to produce the first diesel versions of the car: the BX19D and BX 19TRD. Under the hood of these cars were diesel engines series XUD, 4-cylinder in-line capacity of 1.9 liters capacity of 65 hp.

In 1984, another diesel version appeared in the UK with the BX19 RD index, and then the BX 19 GT (1.9 l / 105 hp).

In 1985, a limited edition of BX Leader in the amount of 2500 pieces, then another BX Sport. The latest version, equipped with an engine capacity of 1.9 liters, capable of developing a speed of 201 km / h, caused a great demand from customers, which was why it was put into mass production.

In 1985, the BX Break wagon appeared, to which its own engine line was proposed: 1.6-liter gasoline, 1.9-liter and 1.9-liter diesel in two versions of RS and TRS.

Despite the fact that the BX interior is distinguished by its simplicity of finishing, you cannot refuse it in comfort, while the car is unpretentious and economical in operation. The BX Break used an updated gas-oil suspension system, which not only provides high ride comfort, but is also adjusted depending on the size of the load being carried.

An unusual feature of the VC with a diesel engine with a displacement of 1.9 liters and a power of 71 hp. is the height of the body is adjustable: the body is lowered when carrying goods and rises when driving over rough terrain.

Citroen continued to produce limited versions of the BX. One after the other go: BX Digit (car using numerous electronic components) and BX 4 TC (4 cylinders, 4-wheel drive).

In 1986, there were five new variants of a station wagon: BX 14 Estate (with a 1.4 liter / 72 hp engine), BX 19 D, BX 19 D Enterprise, BX 14 E Enterprise and BX 16 S Enterprise.

In the summer of 1986, Citroen BX is subjected to reystayling. There is a new improved dashboard, which featured increased pointers and other ergonomic changes. After the reystayling, five new versions come onto the market at once:

- BX 19 GTI with a new 4-cylinder engine 1.9 liters with an electronic fuel injection system of 125 hp

Hydropneumatique sur Citroën BX

- BX 17D, created on the basis of the BX 19 RD with the new engine of the XUD7 series of 1.8 liters

- instead of the BX 19 GT, the BX 19 TRS starts to be released

- BX 16 TS and BX 19 RD appear

In the summer of 1987, they began to produce BX GTI 16 -Valve (Soupapes). It was the first car with a 16 valve engine, developed in France, and the Motronic fuel injection system. ABS was offered at an additional cost.

1988 brought three versions of the BX with the RD Turbo, TRD Turbo and TRD Turbo Evasion turbo diesel engines. All three versions were equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line diesel engine of 1.8 liters capacity of 90 hp.

The BX 19 TRI with the engine from the BX 19 GTI comes on sale. In July, the next limited series BX Olympique appears with a 1.4-liter TU engine with a capacity of 72 hp. The maximum speed of 167 km / h.

In February 1989, the BX 4x4 and BX19 4x4 Evasion were introduced with 4 driving wheels. These four-wheel drive versions have three differentials: front and center with electronic locking and rear high friction. Both models are equipped with a 1.9 liter engine producing 107 hp.

A bit later, a BX 19 4x4 GTI model appears with an engine from a BX 19 GTI (125 hp)

At the same time, the old models are replaced: the BX, BX 14 E, BX 14 RE, BX 15 RE and BX 16 RS with the new BX 14 TE, BX 14 TGE, BX 15 TGE and BX 16 TGS. At the end of 1989, the BX 19 TGS appears and two limited series BX Tonic and BX Image are announced.

In 1990, the Paris Motor Show presented two new versions: the BX 4x4 Diesel and the BX 4x4 Evasion Diesel. Both versions were equipped with 4-cylinder diesel engines of 1.9 l and 71 hp. The vehicles were fitted with a transmission with permanently connected bridges.

At the end of 1992, the BX16 TXi hatchback and wagon were added to the range of models with catalytic neutrolizers.

In February 1993, BX Evasion Cottage Diesel and Turbo Diesel were added to the list of versions.

There are in the cabin BX and its nuances. For example, the left stalk switch in addition to the turn signals includes side lights, headlights and beep. At the bottom of the center console are three closing compartments. On top of the ashtray and coin box under the lowest curtain is a radio. At the disposal of the front passenger as many as two glovebox. And the bottom - two-storey and lockable. Between the front seats, next to the handbrake, there is an inconspicuous 4-position switch that controls the hydropneumatic suspension.

Despite the fact that for all the time of production, the appearance of the car has not changed, and even instances of the last years of production do not shine with modern forms, the BX cannot be denied practicality. For example, the car is comfortable to sit down. And not only forward, but also back. The rear wheels are located almost under the trunk, so the rear doors turned out to be large and wide. Unexpectedly spacious is the passenger sofa. He also moved far back, and plenty of legroom. Such an advantageous layout of the cabin was achieved because the stern of the car is not blocked up from the inside by springs and shock absorbers. They are replaced by compact hydroaccumulators.

In 1994, BX was discontinued and Xantia came to replace it. 12 years of release - an indicator that the car was very popular in Europe.
