2 series is designed to replace the 1 series coupe as the initial two-door, and also conducts some kind of reorganization of the nomenclature, in which sedans and station wagons will wear odd numbers, while even ones remain behind coupe and convertible cars.

Bavarians felt that the all-wheel drive system, which has a "one", for the "two" is irrelevant, and therefore the coupe is strictly rear wheel drive.
