VAZ-2108 is a small class passenger car with front-wheel drive and a transverse engine. Produced by the Volga Automobile Plant.

The car VAZ-2108 first appeared in 1984. This model with a three-door hatchback became a truly epochal event not only for the Volga car plant, but also for domestic motorists. It was proposed to call it in the domestic market - "Sputnik", but the name did not stick and in the end the export - "Samara" was approved. Model VAZ-2108 Sputnik / Lada Samara marked the beginning of the mass production in the country of front-wheel drive cars. The car turned out, of course, more reliable to drive, safer and more economical than the classic "Lada". Corrosion resistance of the body has also become objectively better.

The novelty was everything: front-wheel drive layout, hatchback body, engine transverse position, contactless ignition system, McPherson-type front suspension, rack and pinion steering, clutch cable, energy-absorbing plastic bumpers.

Cars of the first editions suffered, as is customary, "childhood diseases", which the plant was outgoing in the course of production, on consumers. The short-lived and terribly scarce components of the electronic ignition system (especially the early switchboard model 36.3734) were particularly annoying. However, the carburetors of the “Solex” type didn’t allow to relax (and still do not), not to mention the current racks, the wear of the covers and the CV joints themselves, the rattling front panel and the upholstery of the cabin and the unreliable design of the door locks. Partly with some faults in later releases, they were able to cope, for example, with self-unscrewing the front hub nuts and the clutch cable breakage, but most problems continue to poison the lives of the Samar owners.

However, the squeaks and crashes that make upholstery and panels may also indicate improper operation (with the overload that the body has caused) or the loose fit of the upholstery panels to the body that was installed after the accident. Despite the wide doors, the entrance and entrance to the rear three-seater seat are difficult. This circumstance, as a rule, is interpreted in favor of a certain image of youth sportiness, although all over the world it is rather a sign of a “car for housewives” (it’s cheaper and safer when transporting young children - it will not fall out). The interior is completed with anatomical tapestry seats with a sufficient margin for adjustments in three directions, the door upholstery does not suffer from defects, as well as other peripherals in the cabin (although they begin to "accompany" after a short run). Among the annoying little things are found such as the lack of head restraints for the rear seats and an ashtray, the inconvenience of access to the seat belts of the front seats (the body rack is too far back), the high location of the edge of the trunk. The spare wheel is located in the boot niche. The capacity of the trunk increases with the rear seat folded down (unfortunately, it does not stack up in parts and does not fully take up the horizontal position, which does not allow carrying really bulky items).

The machine is equipped with in-line 4-cylinder petrol engines. Initially, the 1.3-liter 65-hp (VAZ-2108) with a four-speed gearbox was taken on a VAZ-2108 base engine. It is distinguished, with proper and timely maintenance, sufficient reliability. He is able to easily pass 150 thousand km (subject to the owner’s non-racing temperament). The only thing you have to put up with is the frequent replacement of the oil filter and the need for servicing the ignition and adjusting the valves only at the service station. Modification VAZ-21083, manufactured since 1987, is equipped with a carburetor engine working volume of 1.5 liters. VAZ-21083i - injection engine displacement of 1.5l. Somewhat later, for export to some countries, they began production of a VAZ-21081 modification with an inline 4-cylinder petrol 1.1-liter 53-horsepower not too temperamental engine. In 1996, the release of this modification completed.

In 1990, the front end was restyled, as a result of which the G-8 acquired a different form of wings and got rid of the notorious "beak." On the market, versions with a separate "beak" in the front and a "short wing" (until 1991 release) give way to models of the VAZ-21083 with a "long wing". There are quite a lot of offers for the sale of the VAZ-21081 and the VAZ-21083 with a velor interior and a more comfortable luxury panel with a tachometer and a trip computer (standard for VAZ-21099 sedans and versions with injection engines), which are also installed on cars that have been in accidents (to more expensive to shove). It should be wary of the proposals of young car owners to sell non-standard cars 6-7 years old, filled with various accessories and "music". Nevertheless, in recent years, many small tuning companies have emerged, with might and main turning the G-8 into an almost coupe. Replacement of serial racks for imported gas-filled, engine modifications, etc. is especially popular. At one time, the unsuccessful design of the "beak" brought to life a whole stratum of small firms and firms that tried to produce various overhead design details that changed the unsuccessful appearance of the "eight".

There are a number of models that do not differ in their characteristics from the basic models, but because of the difference in the location of nodes and assemblies, they received their own indices. Export versions produced for the UK - VAZ-21086, VAZ-21087, VAZ-21088. These are analogues of models VAZ-2108, VAZ-21081, VAZ-21083, respectively, but with the right-side steering column. The layout of the control pedals and the brake servo is changed accordingly. Changed the motion algorithm of the windshield wipers. They move from left to right, which is due to the 'mirror' wiper drive mechanism.

Occasionally, western-style convertibles with injector engines (Natasna, Bohemia Cabrio) can be found. Sometimes they offer right-hand drive models from the UK (such cars carry factory indices: 21086 with a 1.3 l engine; 21087 - 1.1 l; 21088-1.5 l). There is also a double van VAZ-2108F (VAZ-1706) Shuttle (the name speaks for itself) with a high plastic roof (total height 1900 mm) and a cargo compartment of 2.2 cubic meters. Its loading capacity is 450 kg, and its loading height is reduced to 550 mm due to the original design of the rear door.

Now you can choose options with different instrument panels ("high" or "low"), with a fuel injection system and various additional equipment. The last novelty - installed at the factory on the part of the release of the system of protection against car theft. This generally successful car, even after more than 15 years of production, remains popular with buyers, mainly due to its low price, good driving properties and the availability of repairs.

In 1998, on the basis of models 21083 and 21213, the VAZ-210834 Lada Tarzan SUV was developed, in 2000, the VAZ-210832 Satellite / Samara.
