In 2005, the idea to turn the Boxter into a real coupe came into the bright minds of Porzhevsky designers and marketers. At the same time, Boxter with a non-removable metal dome was suggested to be considered a separate model, for which they came up with a crocodile name - Cayman.

The official premiere of the car took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2005.

Outwardly, the Cayman S sports coupe looks almost like a Boxster S with a hard top. The differences are minimal in front - round “foglights” are embedded in the front bumper air intakes instead of rectangular Bokster ones. The car's feed has changed significantly - the hardtop is falling smoothly, and does not break off behind the seats as a “cap” on the Boxster. Round steel and rear fenders of the car. In the tail of the Cayman, as in the Boxster, an automatically retractable short tail spoiler is integrated.

The Cayman S is powered by a new 3.4-liter six-cylinder boxer engine. The power unit is equipped with the Porshev VarioCam Plus system, which changes the valve timing and valve lift. The system increases torque at low revs and increases efficiency. Until now, such a device was relied only on Porsche 911 engines. The engine develops 295 liters. with. and 340 Nm of torque at 4.4 - 6 thousand rev / min. With this engine, the Cayman S accelerates to 100 km / h in 5.4 seconds. A six-speed gearbox was taken from the Boxter S. By order of the coupe, a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift - Tiptronic S. will also be installed. Porshevtsy improved this box by installing new hydraulics and electronics.

One of the curious features of the Porsche Boxter, stemming from the central-engine layout, is the presence in the car of two trunks at once: front and rear. Both of them, however, can hold quite a bit - the front volume is 150 liters, and the rear one - 130. The list of additional accessories for Porsche cars includes a branded suitcase and golf bags - the suitcase is “installed” just in the front compartment, and the bags with the sticks - in the rear. In the Cayman, there will be more luggage space in the back - "whole" 260 l.

The standard equipment of the machine includes a PSM (Porsche Stability Management) system. It corrects the driver's mistakes, automatically removing the "gas" and slowing down the car. On request for Cayman S, you can put the system PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). This device adjusts the ground clearance and the stiffness of the shock absorbers, depending on the road conditions and the chassis tuning mode selected by the driver - regular or sporty.

A few months after the debut of the Cayman S, its basic version comes out on the market - the Cayman. This glorious representative of the Porsche genus is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine of 2.7 liters capacity of 245 hp, or 180 kW at 6,500 rpm. The rated torque is 273 newton meters in the range of 4600-6000 rpm. And the power density is at the level of 91.2 l. with. per liter working volume. At the same time, the average fuel consumption is only 9.3 liters per 100 km. The mass of the Cayman is 1300 kg - it is an athlete in its class. A favorable weight-to-volume ratio directly affects acceleration.

With this unit, the car shows very outstanding results: acceleration to 100 km / h takes 6.1 s, and the maximum speed is 258 km / h. The drag coefficient is cw = 0.29.

Porsche is ready to offer the Cayman three transmissions to choose from: a five or six-speed manual or a firm five-range Tiptronic automatic transmission with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

The front suspension, as on all serial sports cars Porsche, consists of suspension struts with a special arrangement of longitudinal and transverse levers. This concept provides very precise wheel alignment combined with a high level of comfort. An additional spring with an emphasis in the strut comes into play with high lateral acceleration and minimizes the side roll angle. Specially developed for the basic configuration of the Cayman alloy wheels with a diameter of 17 inches with five characteristic twin spokes are fitted with front tires of dimension 205/55 and 235/50 at the rear.

For those who wish to offer a sports package. It includes a six-speed manual gearbox and an active chassis Porsche Active Suspension Management with shock absorbers, the rigidity of which is continuously and automatically adjusted depending on the dynamics and quality of the road surface. The driver can choose one of two chassis tuning programs: Normal mode provides a comfortable basic shock absorber setting, which automatically switches to a more sporty mode with a dynamic driving style.

With the "sport" setting, more stringent damper characteristics are included for emphatically dynamic control. All wheels are equipped with perforated and ventilated brake discs, which are able to divert energy in the form of heat, including under prolonged loads. Each of the eight pads is pressed against the disc by two pistons installed in anodized black fixed calipers.

The Cayman is a car that can be individually equipped with almost all existing options. One of these options is the Sport Chrono package, which, when a button is pressed, delivers a sporty setting of various functions of the car and thereby increases the dynamics: the throttle responds faster to the movements of the accelerator pedal, the driver feels the increased pickup of the 2.7-liter power unit, the sensitivity of which saved to maximum speed. At the same time, the PSM (Porsche Stability Management) Stability Management system, which is included in the basic configuration, shifts the regulation threshold towards the limit modes and allows for increased slip and side slip.
