Old Top Gear 1991 - Citroen ZX

ZX debut took place in 1991. The model lasted on the conveyor for more than six years and enjoyed great success in Europe. The predecessor of the ZX, Citroen GS, was once very popular, so the company's specialists had the task not to harm. The car was created with an eye to its predecessor. Even the dimensions should have been the same. But in the end, the ZX turned out to be a completely new car, not even outwardly similar to the previous model.

The first ZX was released with a 5-door hatchback. At the end of 1992, a 3-door version appeared, and in November 1993, the ZX Break station wagon.

In July 1994, the model was restyled. It was simply necessary to eliminate the structural and technological flaws that have emerged from the car during the first years of operation. Instead of a “deaf” grille lining, a false radiator grille with an emblem in the middle appeared.

The five-door Citroen ZX was assembled in France, the three-door in Spain, and the limited-edition ZX 16V series was also produced there.

Universal ZX Break took its place of honor in the model range of Citroen. An additional 20 cm in length compared to the base hatchback went ahead: the boot volume is 490/1580 liters versus 325/1145 liters in the hatchback.

The back of some of the ZX has a remarkable ability to move back and forth, thus adjusting the volume of the luggage compartment - a unique solution for those times. The back of the sofa in the versions of Advantage and Aura reclines entirely.

Present in the ZX and the traditional French decision to place the spare tire under the bottom of the trunk.

It offered four basic levels of equipment. The simplest is Reflex. In the middle is Advantage. At the top of the scale is Aura. There was also a sports version of Volcane with powerful engines and top of the range.

As is common with Citroen, the range of modifications has been expanded to include many limited editions and special designs. Allure, Audace, Flash, Fugue, Miami, Prestige — all of these versions had specific differences from the standard nomenclature: sports steering wheels, exclusive upholstery materials, tinted windows and other nice features.

The Citroen ZX powertrain line is directly inherited from the AX and BX models with the same transmissions.

Gasoline engines were six. Two mono injected: 1.1 l (60 hp) and 1.4 l (75 hp). The rest - with distributed injection. The 1.6 liter (90 hp) was available for the Aura. 1.8 liters (103 hp) - for the sports three-door ZX Furio. The most powerful two-liter engines: 2.0 liter (122 hp) for the Volcane version and the top version 16V with a power unit of 150 hp.

On the ZX installed three versions of diesel engines with a model BX. The oldest - atmospheric 1.8 liters (60 hp). The other two - 1.9-liter, with a capacity of 71 and 90 hp. (turbo). Engines have a high degree of reliability and efficiency.

The front suspension - McPherson strut, rear - torsion. A passive thruster rear suspension Citroen ZX gives you the opportunity to take turns at high speed and with minimal roll.

Power steering was installed only on some ZX. Amplifiers and ABS - the prerogative of expensive versions of the ZX. Front brakes - disc on all versions, and starting with 1.6 "gasoline" - ventilated. Behind there are drums everywhere, except for the two-liter petrol versions.

Citroen ZX is a car that perfectly combines simplicity and comfort, low maintenance cost and excellent build quality, durability of components and low fuel consumption.

In the entire history of the release of Citroen ZX released more than a half million cars. In 1997, the last European ZX rolled off the line, giving way to the Citroen Xsara. Citroen ZX is still produced in China at the joint Chinese-French enterprise Donfeng-Citroen Automobile Co.Ltd.
