All-new BMW X5 SUV 2019 REVIEW - see why it's the best all-round BMW!
BMW X5 - the first in the long history of the company BMW full SUV. Thanks to the impressive ground clearance, permanent all-wheel drive and independent suspension of all wheels, the car is designed to drive on all types of roads. Debut took place in January 1999 at the Detroit Auto Show. Entered the European market in the spring of 2000.
At the heart of the BMW X5 is a completely new platform. Unlike classic SUVs, this one has a carrying body. The design turned out bright and respectable. The back door is double. Placing a spare wheel in the back is not provided. The trunk volume is large, and the configuration of the luggage compartment itself does not allow transporting large items.
In the cabin reigns comfort and luxury inherent in luxury cars. The decoration used a lot of leather and natural wood inserts. The steering wheel has a lot of adjustments. The driver and passenger seats can also be customized. High landing provides excellent visibility.
A rich list of standard equipment includes automatic climate control, electric glass sunroof, front and side airbags, heated front and rear seats, a 6-disc CD-Changer audio system, xenon headlights, headlight washers, rain sensor, and light alloy wheels.
The BMW X5 is equipped with a 4.4 liter all-aluminum V8 engine with a power of 286 hp. He is able to accelerate the car to a speed of 100 km / h in just 7.5 seconds. Moreover, thanks to the Double Vanos proprietary variable valve timing system, the engine operates at almost maximum efficiency throughout almost the entire rev range. The power unit is paired with a Steptronic hydromechanical 5-speed gearbox.
The SUV has an independent suspension for all wheels, and the distribution of torque along the axles is monitored by the electronics, which brakes the wheel sticking, thereby contributing to the transmission of more torque to the other wheels. The rear suspension is equipped with a system for maintaining ground clearance, regardless of static load, which is achieved by using pneumatic elastic elements controlled by electronics.
The brake system is at a height thanks to the giant brake discs, which are installed on all wheels, and the dynamic braking control system, capable in critical situations when the driver begins to actively depress the pedal, to increase the braking force. Separate words deserve the system of descent from the hill. The special program maintains a smooth, direct descent from an elevation at a speed of about 10-12 km / h.
The car is equipped with virtually all known electronic systems. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) Dynamic Stability Control System includes conventional ABS, CBC cornering braking system (Cornering Brake Control), DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) braking dynamics control system and Automatic Stability Control (ASC-X).
In 2003, an updated version of the BMW X5. It is distinguished by a modified body design and a number of technical innovations, including a revised all-wheel drive system. Characteristic features of the upgraded version have become a more expressive hood, gradually turning into the grille, which in its form also differs from that used on the previous model. The car received a new front bumper, changed the front and rear lights.
A major modernization has undergone all-wheel drive system xDrive. It constantly analyzes the road situation and driving mode, and, if necessary, dynamically redistributes the engine torque between the axles. And this happens not only when driving on rough terrain, but also during high-speed cornering. Not the last role in the operation of the all-wheel drive system is played by a multi-plate clutch with electronic control, which ensures a quick response to changes in road conditions.
In the course of the modernization, the X5 received two new engines: a 4.4-liter petrol V8 and a 3.0-liter diesel engine with the Common Rail system. The gasoline power unit with valve stroke adjustment system, double vanos and intake system with a smoothly adjustable intake path length develops 320 hp. and accelerates to 100 km / h in just 7.0 seconds. The maximum speed is 240 km / h if the car is equipped with tires with a speed class "V". When equipped with tires class "H" maximum speed is electronically limited to 210 km / h. The engine is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The straight six-cylinder turbodiesel develops 218 hp. With him marks 100 km / h the car reaches after 8.3 seconds, and the maximum speed is 210 km / h. Thanks to an impressive torque of 500 Nm in a very wide rpm range, this engine confidently pulls the car off asphalt roads and on the steepest mountain slopes. Fuel consumption is low - only 8.6 liters. In the basic configuration, this engine is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox, and to order with a six-speed automatic transmission.
In 2006, at the Paris Motor Show, BMW introduced the second generation SUV. The car has become noticeably larger than its predecessor, has received a more aggressive and expressive design of the body and interior. The length has grown by 20 cm to 4.85 meters, which made the cabin much more spacious and more comfortable, as well as accommodate an additional 3 rows of seats, thereby increasing the capacity of the jeep to seven people. The silhouette retained the same proportions, the lower part of the body is protected by a black plastic body kit. Body surfaces have become more plastic, sculpted. Attention is drawn to headlights of the original color and expressive grille. Along the edges of the front bumper appeared "air intakes" highlighted with contrasting material. Wheels 18 inches in the "standard", to order - 19 or 20. BMW X5 has the best indicator in the class in aerodynamics - coefficient Cx 0.33
The interior has become more conservative and cozy, thanks to the smoothed outlines. The cabin has a new dashboard. The BMW X5 is equipped with AdaptiveDrive. With the help of numerous sensors, AdaptiveDrive constantly analyzes a variety of indicators: movement speed, roll angles, acceleration of the body and wheels, height position of the body. Based on this information, the control of the stabilizer motors and the electromagnetic valves of the shock absorbers is controlled. Thus, there is a constant regulation of lateral rolls and depreciation efforts, depending on traffic conditions.
The base engine was a three-liter six-cylinder petrol unit with a capacity of 265 horsepower. With him, the X5 accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.3 seconds. The eight-cylinder 4.8-liter engine with a power of 367 horsepower accelerates the SUV to “hundred” in just 6.5 seconds, and the maximum speed reaches 240 km / h. The range of petrol engines is complemented by a three-liter turbo diesel with two superchargers with a capacity of 272 hp.
Technical equipment at the highest level. The Active Steering system allows you to change the gear ratio of the steering gear depending on driving conditions: you can maneuver during parking without intercepting the steering wheel. The brakes are also not easy - they are automatically cleaned of moisture in wet weather, they are prepared for emergency braking when the foot is drastically removed from the gas pedal. When overheated, the smart system applies extra force to the pads. Electronics will help start the movement on a steep slope. As standard, the X5 is equipped with a parking system with front and rear video cameras.
As an option, it is also proposed a system for projecting data on the windshield - Head-Up display. Important information regarding driving parameters, such as speed or navigation system prompts, is ergonomically displayed directly on the windshield, directly in the driver's field of vision. The third row of seats is also an option, the standard five-seater car.
In 2010, the manufacturer subjected the model restyled. The updated model successfully debuted at the International Geneva Motor Show. The creators had a difficult task to surpass themselves, making a very successful car even better.
The updated version features a new grille, increased air intakes, a modified form of the front bumper, headlights and taillights. It is worth noting rings of LEDs that appeared around the headlights. They look very impressive. The car became more dynamic and aggressive, while retaining all its elegance. The next item in the list of exterior changes is a new color scheme (a popular brown shade has appeared, the number of elements in the front and rear apron painted in the body color has increased). Complements the picture of a new design of alloy wheels.
The main changes are hidden under the hood. All motors have become more powerful, and at the same time - more economical and more environmentally friendly. Customers can now choose a pair of petrol engines - a six-cylinder inline 35i / 306 hp. and V8 50i / 407 hp, as well as six-cylinder turbo diesel 30d / 245 hp and 40d / 306 hp By the way, gasoline engines have completely changed: the place of the former atmospheric 4.8 liter was taken by 4.4-liter with an adjustable double turbocharger. And the former deserved "six" was replaced by a more advanced one with a turbocharger. All engines comply with the Euro-5 toxicity standard. A harmonious pair with modernized engines is a new eight-speed “automatic” ZF (before the box was six-speed). The transmission has a new torque converter with reduced losses and an increased range of gear ratios.
BMW X5 2010 embodies almost all developed by Bavarian designers latest technological innovations. Among the principal innovations in the X5 2010 equipment are the Active Steering used on the coupe and BMW sedans, which allows for greater maneuverability and controllability. In addition, for the first time in this class, uniting into one whole all the active suspension elements (active dampers and electronically controlled anti-roll bars), which change the rigidity, appeared, the AdaptiveDrive system. Receiving information from numerous sensors, the computer of the new BMW X5 assesses the situation and provides a stable position of the body above the road, changing the necessary characteristics. Thus, rolls in the implementation of turns are practically excluded.
The BMW ConnectedDrive BMW X5 program offers a wide range of driver assistance systems and services for even greater comfort and safety. In addition to the projection display, Adaptive Headlight, Automatic High / Low Beam Switch, Parking Distance Control (PDC) and Rear View Camera including Surround View, the new BMW X5 also offers a tracking system for markings. , speed limit indicator and side view system (Side View).
As always at the height and level of security. Standard equipment includes front and side airbags, side airbags for head protection for the first and second row of seats, three-point automatic seat belts for all seats with tension controls and active head restraints for the front seats, as well as ISOFIX attachments for installing a child seat in the rear parts of the cabin. In addition, the standard equipment includes tire puncture indicators, safe Runflat tires and adaptive brake lights.
The debut of the third generation (factory index F15) held at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. The platform of the novelty almost did not change, the length of the wheelbase remained the same, the front “double lever” and the multi-link design at the rear remained almost the same - the modifications were reduced to a change in geometry, and the springs and shock absorbers slightly reconfigured to achieve a more comfortable ride. Body stiffness increased by 6%. Dimensions: length - 4886 mm, width - 1938 mm, height - 1762 mm, wheelbase - 2933 mm. The car became wider and lower (by five and four millimeters, respectively), and added 32 mm in length, which completely went into the front overhang. Ground clearance decreased from 222 mm to 209 mm. The curb weight of the crossover has decreased by 150 kg, compared with its predecessor.
The characteristic features of the front end include a narrower head optics and a new bumper with a more geometric design. The hood stretched out in length, the family nostrils are no longer piled back, but stand vertically. Changed front air intakes and three-dimensional LED taillights. On the side there are interesting details like a neat slot in the front “wings” and a dynamic line running through the door handles. The car began to look more modern and presentable.
The drag coefficient decreased from 0.33 to 0.31. Not least, the reason was through cuts along the edges of the front bumper, due to which the negative turbulence in the area of the front wheels was reduced, and active blinds in the front air intake.
Two design lines are offered - Design Pure Experience (unpainted edging of wheel arches, silver matte color of vertical grille slats) and Design Pure Excellence (lining on wheel arches in body color, black "nostrils" slats with chrome glossy front trim).
The updated BMW X5 has a more spacious interior, which can be equipped with a third row of seats on request. Front seats with developed side supports can boast a large number of electric adjustments and memory for two positions. On the second row of the place, people, whose height is above 180 centimeters, can easily be enough, and the flat floor should also be taken to pleasant moments of the “gallery”. The back of the sofa is in the ratio of 40:20:40. The luggage compartment is now 650–1870 liters. The upper part of the double tailgate in the basic configuration is equipped with an electric drive, which, when you press the buttons in the cabin or on the key fob, opens it and closes it. Raised floor, rising on a gas support, hides from his eyes a deep niche.
The quality of materials has risen to an even higher level, and contrasting inserts give a special chic. The new interior has a standard glossy black wood trim with chrome accents. The variety of options for leather upholstery is huge. The larger iDrive display (10.25-inch diagonal) now proudly sits above the center console, with a high-quality Bang speaker located behind the screen & Olufsen. The overall style of the lower part of the center console has not changed. The iDrive control unit is located to the right of the gearshift selector; on the left, the buttons responsible for the operating modes of the suspension and powertrain and other control keys are located.
The base engine is a 3.0-liter Twin Turbo, a six-cylinder inline with a return of 306 horsepower and 406 Nm of torque, which is transmitted through an eight-speed automatic transmission. This motor accelerates the car to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds.
The top-end version of the X5 xDrive50i is equipped with a 4.4-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine, which produces 450 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. This engine also works in tandem with an eight-speed automatic. He accelerates the SUV to “hundreds” in 5 seconds. The maximum speed is 250 km / h. In the combined cycle fuel consumption is 10.4 liters.
The xDrive30d modification hides a 258 hp in-line turbodiesel “six” under the hood. A torque of 560 nm is available at 1500–3000 rpm. Gearbox - eight-speed automatic. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 6.9 seconds. In the combined cycle, fuel consumption is 6.2 liters.
The diesel version with a 218-horsepower 2-liter engine became the most voluminous.
Basic X5 versions are offered with all-wheel drive, and with the rear. The xDrive all-wheel drive system is implemented through the use of a multi-plate clutch controlled by the electronics. The transfer box, compared to the previous generation, is lightened by 1.4 kg.
